Austin College: A Parents Perspective

A Testimonial for Austin College Football

A very important person in my life once shared with me that the gift of education is priceless. The monetary sacrifice pales in comparison to the lifelong benefit provided to the recipient. I open with this because the education one receives at Austin College is so comprehensive, thorough and diverse that it is the ultimate example of the opening line. Add Austin College Kangaroo Football to this experience and you have a confluence of experiences that molds tremendously prepared, complete men. I am clearly a proponent of Austin College and specifically of Austin College football and its attributes.

I have personal experience to make these claims. Both my sons have attended AC and played football, the youngest is about to complete his third year and will graduate in May of next year. The oldest has earned two degrees from AC, has coached on the Kangaroo staff as Graduate Assistant and is now a current coach on staff. The influence that AC football and coaches has had on them is incalculable. The relationships they have forged with coaches and players are invaluable and swell my emotions. The personal interest that the coaches and athletic director have taken in their lives is unique and genuine. This practice is team and school wide and not isolated to particular players. There exists a vested and real interest that the AC coaches have in the lives and growth of all players. Obviously I have had opportunities to meet and develop relationships with other AC football players. Their experiences and growth runs parallel to that of my own sons. Given a different forum I could share personal, anecdotal experiences and value from road trips, practices, home games, parent/player picnics, award ceremonies, recruit reviews, graduations and general visits. I have been thoroughly impressed with my experiences at these various events.

The current coaching staff has arrived with a new and sincere vigor while upholding the aforementioned characteristics and practices. Mind you, I have never been dissatisfied with past coaches and direction. However, the attention to detail and dedication to purpose with the current regime is impressive and comforting. The players are being comprehensively challenged and are being prepared to compete at a high level. The staffs’ depth of football knowledge, schemes, philosophy and flexibility are equally impressive and reassuring. I have great expectations for success for the upcoming season.

Perhaps the best description of AC football and what one could expect from the experience is described in what Coach Dawson has created with the components of an Austin College Man: Team commitment over personal convenience, proudly representing, tough and courageous, and a championship approach to all things. Obviously these components are taught with some elaboration but the gist can be attained with a little imagination. The players know the components and hold one another accountable to them. One of my sons practices these components and the other is on the verge of obtaining them as virtues. They are the foundation of AC football and are practices for life.

I opened with a comment correlating the gift of education, its value and sacrifice. I have not once questioned the commitment we have made to our sons attending AC and playing football. The finished products are young men who are comprehensively prepared for a lifetime and priceless in value.

See you in September when we hear, “First and Ten, Rooooos”
