Here is the Write up on the game posted on our official websaite:
The Austin College football team raced out to a 20-0 lead but had to fight off a late comeback effort by Texas Lutheran University, holding on for a 20-14 victory on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Apple Stadium. The ’Roos improve to 2-0 on the year with the win.
After forcing a punt on the first possession by the Bulldogs, the ’Roos marched down the field largely on the back of Brogan Funderburg, who carried the ball six times for 35 yards and punched it in from a yard out for the touchdown to make it 7-0 at the 8:24 mark in the opening quarter. The ’Roos only threw one pass on the drive but made the most of it as Travis Zambiasi hooked up with Braydon MaQuar for a 39 yard connection.
The scoring came to a halt for the remainder of the first half, however, as neither team could seem to sustain any more drives and the ’Roos went into the locker room holding onto their 7-0 lead.
The offense came back in a hurry in the third quarter though, as the ’Roos scored twice in a three minute span to take a 20 point lead midway through the quarter. Both scores were set up by Matt Finke interceptions, with Zambiasi finding Greg Harrell in the endzone to make it 14-0 with 11:37 in the quarter and Funderburg plunged in from a yard out at the 8:38 mark after Finke returned his second pick 68 yards before getting shoved out at the one. The point after was blocked after the second touchdown.
Texas Lutheran answered right back on the ensuing possession, however, marching 71 yards in seven plays with Mitchell Bunger finding Steven Thrash in the endzone for an 11 yard touchdown at the 5:47 mark. That would remain the score heading into the fourth quarter, when Bunger connected with Robert Salinas for a 33 yard touchdown strike with 6:35 remaining to cut it to a 20-14 margin.
The Bulldogs would get one last chance to complete the comeback after taking over with just over four minutes left in the game, but a quarterback sack by Ethan Tanner with less than a minute remaining sealed the deal for the ’Roos.
Zambiasi completed 11-of-17 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and Funderburg carried 16 times for 73 yards and two scores. Harrell led the Austin College pass catchers with six receptions for 47 yards and a score and MaQuar caught five balls for 73 yards. Defensively, Tanner finished with eight tackles including a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss, Chris Hickson made eight stops and broke up three passes and Finke added five tackles to go along with his two picks.
Bunger finished the game completing 25-of-40 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns and two picks and added 29 yards on the ground to lead TLU. Salinas caught nine passes for 133 yards and Thrash finished with six catches for 63 yards. Jack Moses had 14 tackles to lead the Bulldogs.
